Unique Partnership

Karen Bolinger

I’ve recently returned from the MEA (Meetings & Events Australia) Conference in Melbourne. Going to the conference gave me time out of my day-to-day role to think about ideas and concepts, and discuss them with my industry colleagues and team.

Some of the MEA sessions were inspiring and opened up my mind to the trends coming our way; other sessions were just plain fun.

I tell you this because it brought me back to how valuable conferences and events really are. As organisers and planners sometimes we can forget about our delegates and about the business objectives of holding a conference in the first place.

In my mind, these objectives are key and the content is king. But it is imperative that everything is well planned and expertly executed in a venue that is in sync with the planner.

I am always excited to get feedback from our clients, not only about the practical aspects of event delivery, but on the approach we take in ensuring our clients are true partners. I often hear that we are an incredibly flexible team and venue, and that clients feel that we’re a real part of their team.

I have an example of that to share. Recently we delivered a piece of business with just 12 hours notice. The client called me at home at 7pm with a problem with their current venue – they needed a new venue ready by 8am the next day.

I made a few calls to the key people in our team and got the client a clean and prepared venue, a contract ready for their arrival, and someone to assist by their arrival the next day.

The client left at 3pm with nothing but glowing reviews and praise for the team that delivered with a smile.

Importantly for me, when I made the calls that went back and forth until 9.30pm with my team, I didn’t once get any resistance - just “yes, we can do it”. I was so impressed by the team I work with and felt it backed up our claim of being a ‘unique partner’.

Over the next few months you’ll see changes happening at Sydney Showground, and I hope you’ll get the chance to test this claim for yourself.
